In 2018 the BBC visited the agency, watching workers from low-income components of Nairobi earn $9 (£7) a day on “information annotation” – labelling objects in movies of driving, akin to pedestrians and road lights, which might then be used to coach synthetic intelligence (AI) techniques. Staff interviewed stated the earnings had helped them escape poverty.
